PICS OF CABO FRIO WITHIN RIO DE JANEIRO STATE (SEE ‘CABO FRIO ON MY MIND’ BELOW)
This recall of Rio de Janeiro (Rio) and of Cabo Frio (Cabo) came out of two journeys in 1985 and 1988.The first was on behalf of Akintola Williams & Co to cover the Board meeting of a client domiciled in Ibadan but with Brazilian–Nigerian-Lebanese connections. The meeting took place in Rio but was followed by a short visit to Cabo about 200km away.
The purpose of our journey to Cabo, I later got to know, was to get the company’s Chairman interested in investing in an estate that was developing there. And he did! But to me it was another “money miss road” by another “big man” from Nigeria. From what I knew about his investments in Europe and Nigeria and having travelled widely around the world with him I was sure he might not even come back to Brazil in the next 5 to 7 yrs!
We then returned to Rio through the same road which passed through a countryside of many orange orchards. At that time there was no highway connection to Rio. Neither was there a flight connection. To some extent it was rural Brazil like going through Lagos-Ibadan road which passed through Shagamu and Iperu-Remo in those days when we were growing up.
From this trip I have penned something which is half-travelogue and half-poem.It goes thus:
CABO FRIO ON MY MIND
Going down a lane of memories
After a score and ten years
Touched by an abundance of varied emotions
Remembering those idyllic villas of Cabo Frio
Going from Copacabana through Ipanema
Onto the long bridge leading out of Rio
To a charming countryside with no highways
No air travels, no telecoms but orchards of oranges
200 kilometers later Cabo Frio welcomes you
With open arms, wine and barbecue
It offers you lovely beaches and surfing
Sailing, diving, water-skiing and bowling
It promises you fishing and unending dunes of white sand
Breath-taking views of a lovely coast with schooner trips
But for its charming chalets, flowered villas and peace of mind
A few thousand dollars and your banker’s assurances will do
Cabo Frio, except in my dreams, will I ever see you again?
To feel your tranquility, your soothing balms for frayed nerves
To dine in your beautiful restaurants and sway to your samba
Even if I have to off load the few dollars in my pocket too.
