EVERYTHING IS NOTHING…ANOTHER POEM WRITTEN 40 YRS AGO BY KAYODE ODUMOSU AT UNIFE

EVERYTHING IS NOTHING

God, what is real?
What on earth is lasting?
What has a beginning
That no end awaits?

God, maybe i can’t see
Or understand everything
Was supposed to be something
And them come to nothing

Merciful father, i see
Mighty structures these are
Of cement, sand and stone
But for how long?

Dear God, my flesh
Nostrils, bones and intestines
Shall also come to naught
But i know not why

Dear Father, telling us
Warning us to mend our ways
For we are nothing
Or maybe i still can’t see

God, why all is nothing
See delicate roses
They bloom, such beauties
But wither they shall

Take these signs
Structures will not last
Our bodies will decay
And even roses wither

Our joys, grief and sorrows
None will last
So unhappy my happiness
Soon shall dissolve

So happy my sorrows
Have no strength to last
But shall reappear
A vicious circle

Sadness broods joy
Happiness breeds sorrows
God, I, You
Dare ask why

Everything so solid
So temporary
Everything so beautiful
Shall soon be gone

Everything so delicate
So decaying
Everything so here
Is so nothing…..28/4/75
