…did lunch come too late for that table flower’s survival?…

4.BEFORE THE EXAM (PLANING HOW TO STUDY)

(a) Work out the days and times available between the day of your planning and two days before the exam.

(b) Determine the time of  study to be allocated to each subject from the total time you worked under (a) above

(c) Strategize the most important topics from your syllabus and  from past question papers and allocate the time available for each subject over these topics.

(d) Write down the dates and time for each topic as a program.

(e) There is no need to panic even if you have only two weeks before the exam. This program more or less becomes the time–table you will follow.

(f) Remember that you cannot allow your self-doubt or whatever is outstanding in any subject to tie you down or hold you hostage from planning your study. After all, failure in one subject will not and cannot determine your fate as shown below.

(g) Juggle with a combination of scores in your head noting your weak and strong subjects so that you don’t let one subject destabilize your plans or get you down.

 (h) Determine within yourself  that:

-Before each study period have the following available with you – study program, JAMB syllabus, JAMB past questions and answer booklet, Objective answer sheets for practice, revision note or “red note”, textbook summaries  or the actual textbooks and notes for reference.

– You will attend your lectures regularly.

– Since it is not easy to sit down and start to read meaningfully, your study period should be set at times that will make studying like fun e.g. schedule your studies before something you consider very nice and enjoyable like T.V (PREMIER LEAGUE MATCHES) or snacks or a telephone call i.e. include something that YOU like on the timetable.

PASSING WAEC/NECO IS BASED ON A SERIES OF STEPS:HERE THEY ARE!(3)

IN THE EXAM HALL

STEP L

READ AND OBEY INSTRUCTIONS

Every question paper normally has instructions preceding the questions. The instructions are meant to guide candidates concerning what the examiner expects of them in answering questions. However some candidates either do not bother to read instructions before proceeding to answer the questions or read them but fail to obey same. Disregarding instructions in a question paper has caused failure for many. For example, some question papers have instructions on how to select questions from sections and questions to answer on the whole. Where candidates fail to answer questions as instructed the result is that some of the questions may not be marked or after being marked may have marks deducted or have the answer cancelled . For example, an instruction may read “answer five questions in all,  with at least one question from each of section ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ this means that  the candidate can answer three questions from any one section and the remaining questions one each from the other two sections. Therefore it is advisable for candidates to always subject themselves to the instructions. And to you students, since you are not the examiner you definitely cannot do what you feel is the ideal. The requirements by the examiner are the most ideal for the circumstance. Take this point to heart.

Now compare the former instruction to the following instruction “answer five questions in all, with at most two questions from each section ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’. This means that the maximum questions to be taken from any section is only two. If a candidate under this instruction answers three questions from say section ‘A’ and two questions from say section ‘c’ and avoid section ‘B’, though five  questions in all have been answered, only four questions will be marked for the candidates. Where instructions say “attempt all questions” as is usually the case in JAMB questions papers, failure to attempt all questions could lead to a penalty.

…school days!..hope your school gave u enough LIFE101?…

 STEP M

READ OVER ALL QUESTIONS

Having read over all the instructions thoroughly and taken pains to understand their implications the next thing is to thoroughly read over all the questions from number one to the very last question. The importance of this stage is highlighted in some professional examinations where candidates are usually given some minute reading time prior to the beginning of the test.

This stage requires absolute concentration and confidence, because your reaction at this crucial stage could make or mar the examination  for you. By carefully going through all the questions you could be able to carefully mark out the ones you consider best known to you or not. You will also decide those you are going to attempt. If this stage is taken seriously, you would be able to assess the paper and know from the start how you are going to tackle each of your chosen questions  to secure your best grade. Having gone over all the questions, you should now arrange the ones you have selected in the order you want to answer them. It is common to see candidates answering the very first question on the paper even without reading the subsequent questions.(we call such people RUSSIANS!) Even when it is required to attempt all questions never over look this step.

 STEP N

TIME  ALLOCATION

Generally speaking one thing which man has always found to be inadequate is time. Time! Time!! Time!!! Time waits for no one. Time is never enough for anything in life. Hence one must make the best use of  time  available. Time is as crucial in examination as in other spheres of life and human endeavor. Knowing that time can never be wasted and then recovered, it is essential to maximize the use of time during an examination. Having known the number of questions to be answered and the time allotted to all questions, the ideal thing is to share the time between all the questions proportionately according to the weight of each question in term of marks allotted, where all questions carry equal marks, then the time should be shared evenly. Since you have allotted time to each question, work as quickly as possible to ensure that you do not spend too much time on one question. The essence of sharing time for the questions is just to serve as guide as to the amount of work left uncovered. The time must not be kept to too rigidly, but should be an appropriate guide. Some candidates make the mistake of spending too much time on a question; this may be because they are very much at home with particular topics and would like to write all  they know about them. While not cutting you short from writing as much as you can on your favorite topic (which most probably is the first question you are attempting and will want to secure all the mark allotted to it) remember “you can never score more than the maximum mark for a question even if you spend the whole time answering that question” this is some food of thought, therefore always use time in such a way as to be able to have enough time for all the questions that add up to make the total marks. If you use time wisely, you will never complain of lack of time. When candidates come up out of an examination hall and say that “the questions were cheap but time allowed was so short” what they actually mean is that they got time allocation wrong…

…at praise-worship on fridays?…

 STEP O

ATTEMPT ALL COMPULSORY QUESTIONS

Often times, examiners decide to make some questions compulsory. Once a question is made compulsory, the marks allotted to it are set apart in allotting marks tot the remaining questions, no matter the number of questions in the priority list of the examiner. A compulsory question is compulsory and should not be avoided. Leaving it out deliberately leads to forfeiture of the marks it carries and attracting general disfavor from the examiner when marking your paper. Whether a compulsory  question is considered difficult or not, it should be attempted even if just to secure some minimal marks. Remember that a compulsory question has no alternative and the worst you can do is to attempt it even if as the last question and get some marks out of it.Unless extremely difficult it is advisable to always start with the compulsory question and be sure that you have obeyed the wish of the examiners and secured the desired marks. It may be too bad if you ended up not attempting it before the time for the examination is over. Once you miss it you have missed some vital marks and some friendship from the marker. It is not common for compulsory questions to carry lesser marks than other questions.

…who and whom?…

 STEP P

START WITH QUESTIONS YOU KNOW BEST

Examination is a test of knowledge even though some people have argued that it is not the best test of knowledge. Yet it is the best so far developed by man. When someone is testing your knowledge about something, you owe it as a duty to convince that person how knowledgeable you are. Therefore, how intelligently or unintelligently you start your response say a lot about what more to be expected of you.

There is a common saying that “first impression matters” the only way the examiner can have an impression about you is how intelligent or otherwise you start. Therefore it is essential that you give a good impression about yourself to your examiner that you know what you are talking about from the beginning. The best way to do this is by starting with those questions you know that you are more at home with.

Nothing impresses examiners during marking than taking an answer script and seeing that the candidate is “ talking” sense and has good knowledge of what he/she is “talking”. A drab beginning is enough to discourage the examiner and weaken his zeal thereby causing him tiredness and hunger. But a good beginning enlivens the examiner and raises his spirit and makes him anxious to know how good the candidate actually is. Even when the answers are progressively getting drab the zeal will not be killed suddenly. A poor beginning could be irritating to the examiner and this you must avoid.

 STEP Q

KEEP YOUR ANSWERS TO THE LIMITS OF THE QUESTIONS

To every question there can be as many answers as possible, but of all the possible answers only one is most appropriate to the question asked. For every topic a hundred and one questions can be drawn. It depends on what the questioner is interested in. Supplying the most appropriate answer to the question therefore means taking time to thoroughly understand the question. A standard question that has been moderated by an examiner is usually precise, straight to the point and free from ambiguities. It may equally cover just a very small fraction of a whole topic. It is the duty of the candidate to ensure that he/she understands the question clearly and know what points exactly are required of him/her. Correctness of answer is not a function of volume in terms of pages used but rather it is a function of points. i.e how many points are itemized and enumerated.

Some candidates while attempting certain questions either write everything they know about the topic or just anything they remember on that topic from which  the question is drawn. A candidate in this category should not expect a good pass; the ideal thing is to try to understand the question and precisely tackle it as such.  For example there are differences between how, why, list, explain, compare, differentiate, discuss, briefly highlight etc….as we shall indicate fully in another write-up…
