WHILE ARSENAL WINDOW SHOPS,BARCELONA TO RAID EMIRATES AGAIN? OR IS IT CHELSEA’S TURN?

JACK WILSHERE BECOMES POTENTIAL TARGET!

Jack-Wilshere

JACK WILSHERE

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona have shortlisted Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere as a potential replacement for Thiago Alcantara – who’s expected to complete his move to Manchester United this week.

Alcantara looks to be heading to Old Trafford for a bargain £15m after Barca allowed his release clause to drop from £66m by not playing him in a certain percentage of games last season.

The silly Spaniards have now put together a six-man shortlist of potential replacements for the 22-year-old and according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo, Wilshere is one of the players under serious consideration.

While we had very little choice but to sell to Barca when they came calling for the likes of Petit, Overmars, Henry, Hleb and Fabregas in the past, we are in a much stronger position with Wilshere. Not only does he love the club, but he signed a new long-term contract just 7 months ago and has showed no signs of wanting to leave.

So if the La Liga champions come calling again this summer to enquire about our-Jack, I think it will be a fairly straight-forward ‘NO’ this time around.

Also on their list is Chelsea’s Juan Mata. While the attacker has recently come out and denied speculation suggesting he could be set to leave the Blues, I think the Chelsea fans should have more to worry about than us if Barcelona make an approach for their man.

Mata is Spanish and it wouldn’t be easy for him to turn down the mighty Barcelona. Perhaps Mata has Barca DNA as well? I personally still think he’ll be at Stamford Bridge next season, but there’s far more chance of him moving to the Nou Camp than Wilshere this summer.

Also on their hit-list are Ajax’s Christian Eriksen, Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gündoğan, Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera and Fiorentina’s Borja Valero. Eriksen would be a great signing IMO, how about we make a move for him, Arsene?

HIGUAIN’S SAGA…ANOTHER TWIST IN THE INTESTINES!…WHO LED FANS BY THEIR NOSES?…WENGER OR THE PRESS?

Perez: “We Don’t Want Higuain To Leave, Arsenal Have NOT Made Any Offer”

.HIGUAIN...YET ANOTHER STORY...WHAT ARE WE TO BELIEVE NOW?...

Soooooo, yet another twist in the long-running Gonzalo Higuain saga and it doesn’t sound like good news Arsenal fans.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has now come out and dismissed speculation claiming the striker is set for a move to the Emirates and insists the Spanish club don’t want him to leave this summer. What’s even more worrying, is that Perez also claims we’ve not even made a bid for the 25-year-old.

According to Sky Sports News, the Madrid supremo said:

“We don’t want Higuain to leave.

“What’s more no-one from Arsenal has come to us and made us any offers at all for him. There are no offers on the table.”

This is completely contradictory to what we’ve been lead to believe by various media outlets over the past few weeks. First we were told that we were close to signing him, we were then told a £23m deal had been agreed and Higuain was understood to be on his way for a medical on Friday. Then news broke that suggested Madrid had upped the ante at the last minute demanding we pay nearer £27m and just this morning we read that Carlo Ancelotti was hoping to hold talks with the striker next Monday to persuade him to stay at the Bernabeu.

Do I believe what Perez is telling us? No. I feel this is all part of the game they’re playing. Far too many respected newspapers and journalists have claimed our interest is real and bids have gone in. I think the summary above is just about accurate and Madrid are now playing the whole ‘we don’t want to sell’ card in order to try and force us into paying their new asking price.

Remember, Higuain announced after Madrid’s final game of the season that he was off this summer and very little has happened that would change his mind.

Whats-more, Spanish newspaper Sport claimed today that Higuain is still determined to leave and has asked his agents to push through a move this week before he’s due to return to pre-season training next Monday, so let’s hope that report is accurate and we’re still in with a great shout of landing the talented striker.

If this all goes pair shaped and we end up either with no new striker or someone like Darren Bent, God help Arsene, Gazidis and the rest of the Arsenal board. As the Kaiser Chiefs once said: ‘ I predict a riot’

Higuain Deal Stalls Due To Real Madrid’s Dirty Tactics

.HIGUAIN...YET ANOTHER STORY...WHAT ARE WE TO BELIEVE NOW?...

higuain photoshopped in arsenal shirt

So it appears we know the reason why Gonzalo Higuain is not yet an Arsenal player: Real Madrid have moved the goal posts at the last minute.

Last Thursday, widespread reports suggested the Argentinean striker was all set to move to the Emirates after we agreed a £23m fee and the player was understood to be heading over to London on Friday to undergo his medical and discuss personal terms.

However, worrying news emerged on Friday from Spain with Real Madrid using their ‘mouthpiece’ Marca to claim that NO deal was close and it would take an offer in excess of £23m to persuade the La Liga giants into selling. Nobody really knew what to make of it all but Arsenal fans were not happy.

Today, journalist Sid Lowe has revealed on ESPN that a deal WAS in place but Madrid decided to up the stakes at the last minute and demand more money from us. They let the deal get so close it’s almost impossible for Arsenal to back out, so they have attempted to squeeze a few extra million out of us (£2.5m if you believe what you read on Twitter). A very dirty negotiating tactic, but are we surprised? This is Real Madrid after all.

Lowe is still confident a deal will be completed in the end, but it seems we may have to dig a little deeper if we want to land Higuain. For me, £23m was a steal and if we have to pay £26m, we’ll still be getting a great deal if you compare it to the prices other players are being touted around at this summer.

Even if you compare it to the £25m we got for Adebayor, paying a similar fee for Higuain looks like the bargain of the fricken century! With the likes of Man City, Napoli, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea all on the look-out for a striker, I suggest we just pay an extra £2m or whatever it takes to get Higuain signed-up asap before another club comes in and pushes the price up even further.

Whether we like it or not, the selling club has the power and we’ve used this to our advantage in the past as well, so let’s get a deal done, sign Higuain up and move on to bringing in another couple of players of his caliber.

Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain is expected to complete his move to Arsenal this week, reports suggested that he flew in from Madrid for talks with the club today.

And Higuain’s dad Jorge, who’s also his agent, recently revealed the move has been given the green light by the La Liga giants.

‘We do not negotiate with any club without permission of the selling club,’ Higuain told TuttoMercato.

‘We have permission [from Madrid] and hopefully we can soon see my son in the Premier League.’

Arsenal have already completed the signing of young French striker Yaya Sanogo on Monday, which was the first day of the summer transfer window, that being said, this could be a very busy transfer window for the gunners.

This is reportedly him at Madrid Airport heading to London.

It is understood that Arsenal will pay a club-record fee of around £20-25m to sign the 25-year-old.

A GREAT SEASON APPROACHES FOR ARSENAL AND WILSHERE

Wilshere itching for Higuain arrival

This coming season will be a very exciting one in English football, and should be a good one for Arsenal. Manchester United have a new manager for the first time in nearly three decades, Manchester City have a new manager and are expected to spend big to retake the crown from their rivals and Chelsea have seen the return of “The Special One” with money and ambition to match his name.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Everton and even Swansea will be looking to break the dominance of the top three and challenge for different things. Swansea will be looking to nail down a permanent Europa League place to build from there. Everton are going to fight ever harder to break into the Champions League, although they also need to get used to a new manager in Roberto Martinez. Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham will be battling it out to secure a Champions League spot and Arsenal will likely be challenging for the title so long as some quality players are brought in this summer.

This is also going to be a big season for Jack Wilshere. Since he was 16 or 17 he has been destined for legendary status at the club and he has grown well. Injuries have slightly slowed his development though in the last few seasons and he could be a lot better than he currently is. This upcoming season is his chance to make the leap from a promising talent into a revered world class player who would be welcome in any team in Europe.

He needs to stay fit and continue on his goal of becoming a top, top player. With the arrivals of new players at the club, Wilshere can be a vital part of an Arsenal team that could win it’s first trophy in 8 years. He has the ability, he has the determination and he has the love of Arsenal that can allow him to pull the club out of these hard times and become just as important for the club as Ronaldo is to Real Madrid, Messi to Barcelona and Bale to Tottenham.

Next season if he avoids injury, he will finally fulfil his potential and be of the same midfield quality as Xavi and Andres Iniesta. He will be THE replacement for both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the England team and play a starring role at next year’s World Cup.

As Arsenal fans, we need to show belief in him and support him through the season as it will be the biggest of his career.

Now is the time to step out of the “future talent” tag and into “world class player

HIGUAIN EN-ROUTE TO LONDON FOR MEDICAL AFTER £23M FEE AGREED!

NEWS FROM 4 ARSENAL WEBSITES THIS AFTERNOON!

Fee Agreed

Gonzalo Higuain’s protracted move to Arsenal is inching closer by the day with the Guardian one of several outlets reporting that the striker is on his way to London to undergo a medical after we agreed a £23m deal with Real Madrid. After weeks of negotiations which saw the two clubs clash over a fee, with Arsenal believed to be refusing to meet Madrid’s £25.5m asking price, it seems we’ve finally had a breakthrough with the newspaper claiming a £23m deal has now been agreed.

Higuain’s father, and agent, Jorge confirmed they have been given permission to talk with the Gunners, although slightly worryingly he also hinted that Juventus may still be in the running for his sons services:

“We have been given permission by Real Madrid to negotiate with Arsenal. With luck I will see my son in the Premier League soon.”

“There isn’t anything signed yet, but the negotiations are very advanced. We haven’t spoken about the contract yet. Arsenal have made a great offer, in the same way as Juventus.”

Hopefully Higuain senior was talking in the past tense, as in Juventus did submit a great offer – but one that was rejected by Real Madrid – as I think Gooners would explode if he ends up heading to Turin instead of north London.

The Guardian seem confident it’s a ‘done deal’ though and they say the 25-year-old is now expected to land in London soon to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms – although other reports claim we’ve already agreed a three-year deal worth £100,000-a-week and he could be revealed as an Arsenal player as early as Friday, but this may just be conjecture at this point.

It’s getting closer Gooners, hopefully it wont be too much longer until we see Higuain holding an Arsenal shirt on Arsenal.com!

Real Madrid accept Arsenal offer for Higuain! will sign this week!

There has almost definitely been contact already between Arsenal Football Club and Gonzalo Higuain, but the rules about transfer dealings state that there can be no official discussions between players and prospective teams without the express permission of the player’s existing club, and that means that the selling club have to accept an offer before they allow their players to start organising their transfers.

The father of Gonzalo Higuain has revealed that Real Madrid have now given the Argentinean striker permission to begin talks with Arsenal, and that means that the clubs must have agreed on a transfer fee. The Spanish and Argentinean media is reporting that the Gunners have increased their offer slightly, although sources differ as to what the final figure is, somewhere between £20 and £25 million. Do we care? Not a jot, as long as the deal gets done.

Fox Sports Argentina goes on to report that the 25-year old striker will fly into London either today or tomorrow to complete the deal, which will earn him just over £100,000 a week. This will make him the highest paid player at the Emirates, but not by much so it leaves the Arsenal wage structure relatively unscathed.

Hopefully we can now have an official announcement before the end of the week and we can start looking forward to the season.

Arsenal’s Higuain transfer negotiations at ‘an advanced stage’: latest news from Spain

talkSPORT have the latest on Higuain to Arsenal

Arsenal’s biggest transfer in years looks like it could finally be about to come off, according to reports in Spain. Gonzalo Higuain’s father Jorge has spoken about his son’s negotiations with the Gunners, so talkSPORT thought it was only right to look at what the Spanish press are saying about the whole affair…

An initial agreement between the clubs could already be done
Throughout the process of Higuain’s transfer, Jorge Higuain has stressed that his son would like to leave Madrid in the right way, without causing a fuss at the Bernabeu. As such, many outlets, like Argentina’s Ole are presuming that an agreement between Arsenal and Madrid has now been made in principle, given the admission that Higuain is now negotiating personally with Arsenal. Jorge explains:

“We received permission from Madrid to negotiate face to face with Arsenal, and luckily I’ll soon be able to see my son in the Premier League”. The wheels are in motion, it seems.

Madrid and Arsenal close to sealing the deal
Marca echo the sentiment, saying that “Madrid and Arsenal are close to reaching an agreement for Higuain.” They run a further quote from Jorge Higuain, in which he says that “we wouldn’t negotiate with a club if there wasn’t a previous agreement with the selling club.” Things look promising for Gooners, therefore.

Personal terms still to be agreed
Over at TV football programme Punto Pelota, more details of the progress in negotiations were revealed, with Jorge quoted as saying that “we still haven’t spoken about a contract, that will happen when there is an agreed fee between the clubs. Arsenal have made a big offer, like Juventus.” The line being touted by PP as well as several other Spanish outlets is that Juventus have fallen away from the race to sign Higuain, following their completion of a deal for Carlos Tevez. He’s Arsenal’s to lose.

Real Madrid’s Higuain flies to London to complete £22m Arsenal deal

The Argentine is on the verge of becoming a Premier League player.

There are further developments in the Gonzalo Higuain transfer to Arsenal saga as the Real Madrid star jets to London to seal a £22m move to the Gunners, reports the Daily Mail.
Higuain’s father and agent, Jorge, confirmed that Madrid had given the striker permission to enter talks with the north London club and that they were confident of a deal being completed imminently.
Now the 25-year-old has boarded a plane to the English capital to come and finalise the move with Arsene Wenger and will become the side’s record signing when the switch is confirmed.
It would be a huge coup for Arsenal as Higuain is a forward with bags of experience at the very top echelons of international and domestic football, having scored 120 goals in all competitions for Madrid since a £10.6m transfer from River Plate back in 2007.
The French-born forward has taken that prolific form to his national team as well, netting 19 times in 33 appearances for Argentina.
Higuain should bolster a Gunners attack that lacked bite last season following the departure of Robin Van Persie and the Argentinian will compete with Olivier Giroud for a starting place.
Signing the man from Los Blancos would seriously state Wenger;s intent this year with the club being criticised in recent times for acting too cautiously in the transfer market – a fault that’s been directly linked to winning no silverware for eight successive seasons.
The Argentina international would become the second new addition at the Gunners this season along with France under-20 star Yaya Sanogo, who joined on a free transfer from Auxerre.

SHOULD WE LAUGH?…MAYBE!

WHY HIGUAIN’S TRANSFER WILL BE A GAME CHANGER FOR ARSENAL AND HIS 2012/13 LA LIGA STATISTICS

Why Higuain’s transfer will be a game changer for Arsenal

Arsene Wenger

The protracted Gonzalo Higuain transfer saga appears to have been stretched some more after Arsenal’s talks with Real Madrid appear to have stalled, the Daily Express reports.

The 25-year-old Real Madrid striker was reported to have been in advanced stages of talks with the Premier League club, but according to the aforementioned news article, Arsenal are reluctant to meet Real Madrid’s asking price of 25.5 million pounds. Fans of the club, however, will be hoping that their manager, Arsene Wenger, will be able to negotiate the deal for the Argentinian centre forward.

Wenger’s pursuit of Higuain, whose minutes-per-goal ratio last season was better than Robin van Persie’s and Luis Suarez’s, stems from his desire to have a reliable goalscorer lead the line at the club.

Olivier Giroud, the French striker recruited last summer, had a finer season that most believe, but his primary strengths are link-up play, opening spaces for onrushing teammates, and aerial prowess, which Arsenal have failed to exploit because they haven’t widened their style of play.

However, Wenger, who is perhaps unlikely to change his broadly successful 4-3-3 system, has always wanted his teams to play possession football, relying on quick, short passing, which necessitates the presence of a poacher-like figure at the top; thus, asking his wingers to stick to the flanks and cross in for Giroud to head home was always unlikely to happen.

There is no doubt that Higuain, who, at 25, is entering the prime of his career, was never the focal point of the attack at Real Madrid even though he was the lone striker- a position that came under further threat following the arrival of Karim Benzema. Despite the lack of playing time and a requirement to work the flanks rather than net goals, Higuain has scored 16 goals or more in four of his last five seasons at Real Madrid, and would therefore represent the reliable goalscorer that Wenger and Arsenal’s fans have desperately desired.

However, Higuain, who excels on the counterattack, has often struggled against tight defensive lines, which might be a common occurrence while playing against teams in the EPL, and might require a second striker or a trequartista who stays between the lines and creates space for him by drawing out defenders.

Perhaps, Wenger could play Giroud and Higuain together and rely on the Frenchman to provide him with knock ons using his height. Whatever the formation, though, a striker who guarantees goals will surely flourish under the guidance of Wenger.

Fans will surely be hoping that the contractual impasse is resolved shortly, because with Higuain at the Emirates, and with managerial changes perhaps disturbing teams, Arsenal have the opportunity to mount a serious challenge next year.

Higuain’s 2012/13 La Liga statistics

With all the rumours involving Gonzalo Higuain to Arsenal over the past couple of months we investigated his stats during last season’s La Liga campaign with Real Madrid.

The first thing you will notice is just 19 starts, however this is due to Mourinho opting to rotate the Argentine with Benzema for the central striker role. When he has started however his goals per game ratio is very high.

Here are his stats from the past season in Spain:

Gonzalo Higuain 2012/13 La Liga statistics

  • Appearances: 19 (9)
  • Goals: 16
  • Assists: 5
  • Shots per Game: 2
  • Shot accuracy: 51.8%
  • Conversion Rate: 28.6%
  • Key Passes Per game: 0.8
  • Dribbles Per game: 0.7

So how did he fare compared to his team-mates and Arsenal’s main striker Olivier Giroud?

Obviously Ronaldo was on another planet, but upfront Benzema started the same amount of La Liga matches as Higuain however played two extra from the bench and managed less goals (11).

Giroud started 24 matches with an additional 10 appearances off the bench, scoring 11 goals in his first Premier League season. Not a bad sum for a player in transition, however Higuain’s conversion rate is far more impressive with the Arsenal man netting just under 10% of his shots. The Madrid man also claimed five assists to Giroud’s three.

You can then start to look at the statistics from the Cup competitions, however it is on the international stage that will prick the ears of Gooners with the Argentine scoring 9 goals and claiming one assist in 11 World Cup Qualifiers last season.

Higuain certainly has the goal scoring stats to back up a substantial transfer fee, lets hope Arsenal can eventually lure the striker to north London as he can be a big player for the Gunners next season.

HIGUAIN’S MERRY GO ROUND!…REAL MADRID WANTS 25.5M POUNDS …BUT WILL ARSENAL PAY?…HERE WE GO AGAIN…

Report – Higuain Move To Arsenal In Doubt

HIGUAIN...HERE WE GO AGAIN!...MADRID WANTS 25M ...HERE IS WHAT ARSENAL WANTS TO PAY.

higuain photoshopped in arsenal shirt

Another day and another apparent ‘twist’ in the Gonzalo Higuain to Arsenal saga with Goal reporting that the deal is now in doubt with the club failing to agree a fee for the striker with Real Madrid.

The report claims Arsenal chiefs flew out to Spain last month to hold official talks with Madrid and although no fee was agreed, there was enough confidence that a deal could be struck that the Spaniards gave us permission to negotiate with Higuain and his representatives.

Goal suggest we’ve since agreed terms with the player worth around £100,000-a-week and he now has his heart set on a move to the Emirates, but after weeks of further talks between the two clubs, a fee is yet to be agreed. Arsenal are apparently refusing to go higher than £21m, while Madrid are  demanding £25.5m.

A world class striker is a top priority for Arsene Wenger this summer and the impasse has forced him consider other targets – including Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney. A deal for Higuain remains more likely than being able to land Rooney, but it seems we’re going to have to push the boat out a little further if we’re to bring the Argentinean hitman to north London this summer.

Most fans will be shouting “just pay the f**king £25.5m Arsenal, stop being so tight!”, but big-money transfers like this take time and negotiations can be a long, drawn out affair. So we’re just going to have to sit tight and be patient. Sure, I’ll be gutted if we miss out because we refused to pay an extra million or two but hopefully it won’t come to that.

As ever, Arsenal Station will keep you up-to-date with any developments. I expect there will be several before anything official is announced!

WILSHERE AGAIN!…”ITS PLAYERS LIKE ROONEY WHO WIN TROPHIES!”

Wilshere itching for Higuain arrival

Jack Wilshere believes if Arsenal were to sign England team-mate Wayne Rooney it would strike fear into the hearts of their rivals.

. Additional funds of more than £75million are understood to be available for manager Arsene Wenger as he aims to pull together a squad capable of mounting a long overdue sustained assault on the championship.

Rooney asked to leave Manchester United at the end of last season but it remains to be seen how the situation will develop with the arrival of new manager David Moyes, his former boss at Everton.

Wilshere, though, would welcome his fellow England international into the Emirates Stadium dressing room.

Speaking in a question and answer session with http://www.espnfc.com, Wilshere said: “If it happens, it would be amazing. He (Rooney) is the type of player who can win you trophies – and just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that.”

Arsenal have also been linked with Real Madrid’s £25million-rated forward Gonzalo Higuain and also Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who would, like Rooney, both command significant wages.

Wilshere, 21, believes the calibre of players now likely to be brought in by Arsenal shows they mean business on the pitch. He added: “You look at the type of players like Higuain we are trying to bring in and you have got to be encouraged. I think we need a few more, not to step right into the team, but to add to the squad. “We need our squad to be as deep as United’s and (Manchester) City’s. They can change their back four completely and still win. There is no way United would have won the Premier League trophy with 18 players.”

Wilshere Confirms Higuain Move….On Twitter?!

Jack-Wilshere

The internet and social media sites were awash with speculation last night that Jack Wilshere had inadvertently confirmed Gonzalo Higuain’s arrival at Arsenal after following the Argentinean on Twitter!

Higuain has been ‘one the verge’ of completing his protracted move to the Emirates for what feels like forever now. He’s ‘agreed terms’ more times than I care to remember and he’s been ‘set for a medical’ almost as much as Yann M’Vila was last summer, but still we await any official news from Arsenal or Real Madrid.

So you could forgive some Gooners for getting a little over excited when they noticed that young Jack Wilshere had followed Higuain last night on Twitter.

Wilshere twitter

I read comments like “we’re definitely buying Higuain, Wilshere just followed him!“. Jumping the gun a little but when you’re waiting for a record signing to be announced, fans can sometimes look into things wayyyyy to much.

Of course there is a small chance that Jack knows something we don’t and prematurely followed his soon-to-be new team-mate, but I still think that’s highly unlikely.

Wilshere’s ‘Twitter-gate’ came just hours after ESPN published an interview with him where he was asked about the prospect of Higuain joining the club, and he seemed excited by the idea and had some changing room banter already lined up:

Are you excited about the prospect of Gonzalo Higuain joining the club?

I’ve never played against him, but anyone who plays for Real Madrid and Argentina has to be quality.

[Wilshere’s eyes widen and he smiles] That’s the sort of picture that will go right up on the bulletin board in the changing room. Some of the lads like to put up photos of other players’ wives and girlfriends and have a bit of banter.

Let’s hope today’s the day we hear something regarding Higuain as I’m not sure how much more of this waiting Arsenal fans can take.

Jack Wilshere has expressed his excitement about Arsenal’s pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain.

The England midfielder reckons the Real Madrid hitman is exactly the right kind of player Arsene Wenger needs to be targeting if the Gunners are going to mount a serious title challenge to Manchester United.

‘You look at the type of players like Higuain we’re trying to bring in and you’ve got to be encouraged,’ he said.

‘I’ve never played against him but anyone who plays for Real Madrid and Argentina has to be quality.

‘I think we need a few more, not to step right into the team but to add to the squad. We need our squad to be as deep as United’s and City’s.

Wilshere also gave Gunners fans a boost by confirming he’s fully fit and raring to go for the new season.

When asked about his recovery progress from the ankle injury which restricted his first team appearances towards the end of last season, he said: ‘100 percent. I’m really looking forward to having a solid preseason.

‘I haven’t had one in two years and once you miss it, you’re always playing catch-up.

‘It’s a chance to show the manager that you deserve to be in the team and I think there’s going to be competition for a few spots.

‘But that’s a good thing. If you’re going to challenge for trophies, you need a big squad. You can’t expect 11 players to do it every week.’

New Arsenal signing scores 2 goals at Under-20 World Cup

Arsenal have completed the signing of 20 year old French striker Yaya Sanogo, and the good news for Arsenal fans is that the youngster is showing his class already, having banged in two goals at the Under 20 World Cup in Turkey.

Sanogo scored in France’s 3-1 win against Ghana and then again from the penalty spot in a draw against the United States, but failed to find the back of the net as France went down 2-1 to Spain in their final group game of the competition.

The talented youngster still had time in between his national duty to put pen to paper on a long term deal with Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger waxed lyrically about his new signing, telling the club’s official website, “Sanogo is a good young signing for us. He has shown that he has potential with his recent performances for Auxerre and also for the France Under-20 side. We are looking forward to Yaya joining us and continuing his promising development.”

Arsenal fans now wait with bated breath on the signing of a major striker, one who could have an impact on Arsenal’s 2013-14 season.

IS SPAIN’S FOOTBALL FEDERATION GOING TO START CHOSING PLAYERS FOR THE COACH AFTER LOSING 3-0 TO BRAZIL?

Keshi must never allow interference from NFF, says Erico

IS SPAIN'S FOOTBALL FEDERATION GOING TO START CHOSING PLAYERS FOR THE COACH AFTER LOSING 3-0 TO BRAZIL?

keshi

EX-INTERNATIONAL and former Assistant Coach of the Super Eagles, Joe Erico has thrashed plans by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to, henceforth, vet Coach Stephen Keshi’s team list insisting that interference, in whatever guise, should never be condoned by the coach.

He has also frowned at the NFF’s President, Aminu Maigari’s condemnation of the inclusion of Nigerian domestic players to face Spain in their last group game a the 2013 Confederations Cup, which ended yesterday, saying it smacks of sheer lack of confidence in the local boys.

Maigari, in a recent interview had sensationally declared that Keshi will no longer be solely responsible for selecting the Super Eagles’ squad even as he queried his team selection during the “Festival of Champions.”

“The Confederations Cup is a big tournament and that’s why the other teams brought their best players…Spain brought their best players, but we did not. Why would you bring a local player to play Spain at such a big stage?

He continued, “this is unacceptable. We have experienced players that were not selected and this is where we have to step in. The coach should not have the sole responsibility on squad selection. We all have to make inputs. This team belongs to 165 million people. Selections should affect all these people so we cannot continue to let this happen because we need to compete well with others.”

Keshi, in a swift reaction said, “I understand Nigerians are emotive and sentimental sometimes but all the players that went to Brazil deserved to be there,” Keshi told BBC Sport.

“I’m the coach and I can honestly listen to constructive ideas on how we can improve as a team. But no one has come to tell me who to pick and not to select. If the team fails the coach is responsible. As the coach, it’s my decision and responsibility. For now, the local players have earned the rights to be in the team.”

Erico, who alongside Amodu Shaibu, qualified the Eagles for a World Cup, is totally in sync with Keshi and insists he should be allowed to do his work.

ERICO

“The NFF must allow Keshi to do the job that they have hired him to do. If he fails, they should fire him after all this job is about hiring and firing. But I do not subscribe to taking dictation from anybody be he from NFF or anywhere,” the retired Nigerian goalkeeper stated.

“As a coach, I accept suggestions as long as the parties that are suggesting are with me on the training pitch, see what I see as the players train. But it is very annoying for you to sit in your office and want to change my team list no matter who you are. I will never accept that. They attempted that with me when I was at ACB Football Club and Iwuanyanwu Nationale and I had to walk away,” Erico stated.

He urged the NFF to adopt the standard practice, by allowing Keshi to do his work and fire him if they feel he has under delivered on his mandate.

On his condemnation of the inclusion of Nigerian domestic players to face Spain in the Confederation Cup, Erico said, “the complex displayed by Maigari stems from the management’s lack of confidence in the domestic league, which they administer. Keshi took those boys there because he has confidence in them after all he also came from the domestic league.”

Brazil 3 V Spain 0 (Fred 2′, 47′ Neymar 44′)

REPORT AND ANALYSIS…

Report B

Neymar
Brazil produced a breathtaking performance at the Maracana to overwhelm Spain and claim their third consecutive Confederations Cup title.

Driven on by the passion of a fiercely partisan crowd, the five-time world champions signalled their intent ahead of next summer’s World Cup by ending Spain’s 29-match unbeaten record with a majestic display.

Fred scored twice, but Neymar again stole the show, scoring Brazil’s second goal with a rasping left-foot shot.

Samba standard

Brazil are the first team to win three successive Confederations Cups. France won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2003.

To compound Spain’s misery, Sergio Ramos missed a second-half penalty before Gerard Pique was sent off for bringing down Neymar as last man, with 22 minutes remaining.

At the final whistle, the Brazil fans proudly chanted ‘the champions are back’. With David Luiz and Thiago Silva providing solidity at the back, the midfield generalship of Paulinho and the mercurial talents of Neymar in attack, the Selecao will certainly be a formidable proposition next year.

The streets around the Maracana had been a place of contrasts in the hours before the game. While protestors clashed with police a mile or so away, tens of thousands of Brazil fans danced in the streets.

The noise built to an incredible crescendo in the hour before kick-off, culminating with the Brazilian anthem, that stirred the passions of the partisan crowd.

History, too, was against Vicente Del Bosque’s Spanish side. Brazil have not lost a competitive match on home soil since 1975 and you have to go back to 1934 to find the last time Spain had beaten them in a competitive match, home or away.

If Spain had dreamt of conjuring an early goal that might take the sting out of the mighty Maracana, they were made to think again by a Brazil side that pressed and probed and, carried on by the sheer emotion inside the stadium, snatched the lead inside two minutes.

Analysis

“I thought it was a great night of football. An extraordinary atmosphere created by the crowd and the Brazil players responded and thoroughly deserved to win the match.

“It’s a bit premature to write off Spain but they were a shambles. Brazil made them look poor. But I think they’re methodical. I’m still not sure about them.”

Hulk’s cross from the right was knocked down by Neymar at the back post. Fred lost his footing but as the ball came back his way, he swung a boot at it from the ground, lifting the ball up and over Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas and into the net.

Spain, normally so calm and controlled, briefly lost their way. Oscar fired narrowly wide from a fantastic chance, while Casillas scrambled back to claw Paulinho’s deft lob from under his crossbar.

Brazil pressed Spain with an intensity that has become their own hallmark in recent times. They attacked with a fluency and flair that unsettled the world champions and that left Pique and Ramos flummoxed time and time again.

On two occasions during the first half, Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers decided against sending Spain defenders off after first Neymar and then Oscar were tripped when through on goal. Both Ramos and Alvaro Arbeloa were show yellow cards, much to Brazil’s frustration.

Spain did create chances, but Andres Iniesta forced a save from Julio Cesar. Indeed, the Barcelona midfielder was at the heart of Spain’s few constructive moments. He started the move that saw Torres’s reverse pass free Jordi Alba who in turn found Pedro only for David Luiz to appear from nowhere and slice a shot that was rolling into the net, high over the bar to safety.

Brazil were finding the strength to block crosses, charge down shots and they attacked with cohesion and confidence. Hulk sent Fred through on goal only for Casillas to come to Spain’s rescue.

But Brazil would not be denied. With half-time approaching, they poured forward again, this time with Neymar. The 21-year-old exchanged passes with Oscar, cleverly coming back onside, took one touch and fizzed a left-foot shot high beyond Casillas and into the net.

Record-breaking

The Spanish were unbeaten in 29 competitive games (won 24, drew 5) before this defeat.

The run was a world record which began after their 1-0 defeat to Switzerland at the 2010 World Cup

The Maracana rose to acclaim their boy wonder as one, but Spain looked shell-shocked as the celebrations continued all around them.

Spain were desperate to hear the half-time whistle. But even that brought only 15 minutes of respite. They were booed as they re-emerged onto the pitch and within two minutes they were three behind, as Fred rolled a delightful first-time finish beyond Casillas to twist the knife.

Nothing was going Spain’s way. Even when they won a penalty when Marcelo flicked a leg at substitute Jesus Navas, Ramos pulled his shot tamely wide, much to the delight of the Maracana. It was a moment that encapsulated Spain’s evening.

The world champions continued to push, with Pedro twice drawing top-class saves from Cesar late on before the hosts lifted the trophy.

For Brazil, the party has only just begun

Argentine Legend: Higuain can be as good as RvP

Former Argentine midfielder Ossie Ardiles believes Gonzalo Higuain has the ability and experience to be a big hit in England comparing him to back-to-back golden boot winner Robin van Persie.
The Real Madrid striker has been hotly tipped to join the Gunners in what has been one of their most promising transfer sagas this summer and is seen as the ideal replacement to the departed prolific forward Van Persie who left for Manchester United last season.

Argentina legend Ardiles feels his compatriot can thrive on English soil and score plenty of goals for his next cluBb.

Sky Sports reported Ardiles said:

-Van Persie is a super player, one of my favourites and one of the best in the Premier League last season, along with Gareth Bale.

-Can Higuain be as good as Van Persie? Of course he can, that’s how good Higuain is.

-You remember when Van Persie arrived he was not exactly, immediately, the best player, it took a bit of time. But he was younger, now Higuain is much more experienced.

-Higuain is a top player. He will always score goals. He likes to be in the box all the time and he works hard for his team, wherever he goes he’s going to be great for the team he’s joining.

Arsenal fans are certainly excited at the prospect of Higuain heading to north London, however nothing has yet been agreed despite the intense media speculation.

He would finally be a like for like replacement for Van Persie – a no nonsense goal scorer. Giroud is an excellent signing and a useful forward however has failed to be the high calibre striker Arsenal require.

If Arsenal can land Higuain he could really give the former Arsenal captain a run for his money for the golden boot next season! Get him Wenger!

“The Super Eagles were a tough opponent” – Spain’s coach, Del Bosque

Keshi_Del BosqueVicente del Bosque has admitted he was a relieved man, after he watched his side defeat Nigeria 3-0 in their last group game at the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Jordi Alba scored either side of a Fernando Torres header, to give La Roja the win, amidst a host of missed chances by the Super Eagles.

“It was a tough match,” Del Bosque said after the game. “We had a great opponent and they managed to create a balance in possession, looking for victory. We had control, patience and I think this was an unfair result as both teams should have scored more.

“To have a balance between patience and all-out speed is very beneficial. We had two big opponents today, the heat and Nigeria. Playing 90 minutes in this heat and at this rhythm is impossible.”

Spain will face Italy in the last four on Thursday.

Eagles need a foreign coach – Kojo

Kojo Williams, a former chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has blamed the Super Eagles technical crew headed by Stephen Keshi for the ouster of  the national team from the ongoing FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

The African champions, defeated Tahiti 6-1 in their opening match but went on to suffer consecutive defeats to Uruguay and Spain to exit the tournament in the first round.

Kojo, who had predicted, in a past interview with Sports Vanguard,  that the Super Eagles were going to be exposed at the Confederations Cup, said that he had been vindicated with the event that unfolded in Brazil, adding that Nigerians should expect more doom in subsequent international matches.

“I just think that we were technically bereft and to show how disgraceful and incompetent we are, Keshi, in the days before the match against Tahiti, said that he had no knowledge of Tahiti. He said he had never seen anything of them before. Imagine such a statement from a coach, who lives in America. Couldn’t he have gone online to search for materials on Tahiti? Tahiti were champions of Oceania and Keshi didn’t know how to get tapes of their matches?

“His counterpart from Tahiti said he watched clips of the Eagles at the Nations Cup. But our coach said that he did not know anything about Tahiti. It shows that we are not professionals at  all. Coming to Uruguay, Keshi also showed that he knew nothing about the champions of South America, Uruguay, who are an aging side and yet we could not expose them. Our boys had no technical depth, which is a fault of the coaching crew. You saw how Uruguay played and a good coach with the same boys we had could have beaten Uruguay.

“I said it before that we needed sound  technical guys to come in and work with our team, because if   we left the job to the present coaches, then we would get more hammering in the future and that was what happened in Brazil.

Did you see that Spain were relaxed and they still walked past us? Did you see that if they needed more goals to qualify that they would have scored more? I said that we were not going anywhere with that team and some people thought I was wrong.

If we are contented being among the best in Africa I don’t have problem with that. We can continue with what we are doing with Keshi but if we want to be among the best in the world then we must help Keshi with a good foreign coach . The problem is that they would not go for the right foreign coach.”

Kojo  laughed off suggestions that the Eagles missed the likes of Emmanuel Emenike and Victor Moses in the attack.

“It is not an acceptable  excuse that for missing a player or two your team crumbles. Nobody should tell me that.  This is a nation of more than 160 million people and we must put our house in order.

Look at Spain, they could afford to play with their substitutes and still get the results. I don’t want to hear that we missed Emenike.

That is not an excuse because whether with or without Emenike, the style of football we are playing is the problem, the tactics. We saw how we played and we knew that we could do better”.

On practical steps to take to get the team back in line, Kojo said that the technical crew has to be rejigged, with the addition of technically sound foreign coaches from Europe.

‘’The way we were attacking was negative. We were going forward, then we would pass back. We could not do anything with our attacking  movements. I am not saying that we should do away with Keshi but I am insisting that we need people who can get change our game and get us results”, added Kojo.

Spain take on fellow European powerhouses Italy in Fortaleza the following night.

Their third victory in a row was almost guaranteed from the moment left back Alba opened their scoring in the third minute with a superb solo effort.

African champions Nigeria briefly rallied, but Spain took total command in midfield and might have added further to the scoreline before the break.

Chelsea’s Torres eventually emerged from the bench to score with a brilliant diving header from Pedro’s cross just past the hour mark. It was his fifth goal in the tournament.

Alba rounded off the proceedings with another fine lone effort, sprinting clear from halfway to beat the Nigeria offside trap.

Abel Hernandez was in the goals for Uruguay, who merely needed to beat Tahiti to progress. His 79-second strike was the fastest in Confederations Cup history. The Palermo striker headed home Nicolas Lodeiro’s corner and went on to grap three more goals.Diego Perez, Lodeiro and substitute Luis Suarez with a late double were also on target.

The red cards came in the second half, the first to Andres Scotti for a second yellow after he had seen his penalty saved by Gilbert Meriel.

Tahiti were also reduced to 10 men when Teheivarii Wagemann picked up a second yellow.

The defeat marked the end of their fairytale inclusion in a top level FIFA tournament, losing to Nigeria, Spain and now Uruguay and conceding 24 goals to just one scored.

But they have proved ever popular underdogs and provided a rare lighter note in a tournament marked by mass demonstrations outside stadiums by Brazilians protesting against poor public services and corruption.
